The Foliage of Love
Does a tree fall in love?
with trusty roots below, cozy canopy above;
or with a strong-willed upright stem
with delicate branches, leaves hanging on them!
Does a tree then cry or reminisce?
for the leaves it watched grow with such fondness;
when, in Autumn, they shrivel and wilt, so ill-fed
and finally fall into the breeze, golden; but dead!
Does love, a child's corpse, make
a manure, for parent's sake?
vitalizing the tree, the fallen leaf
longing inside, hopeful in grief!
Is it love then, that reincarnates?
in a dazzle of bright tints and turning fates
happy little leaves back on the boughs in spring
An ode to love, in the winds, do dancing trees then sing?
with trusty roots below, cozy canopy above;
or with a strong-willed upright stem
with delicate branches, leaves hanging on them!
Does a tree then cry or reminisce?
for the leaves it watched grow with such fondness;
when, in Autumn, they shrivel and wilt, so ill-fed
and finally fall into the breeze, golden; but dead!
