The state and the fate of the Nation

The country faces its toughest times in recent years with large scale corruption, increasing crimes against women and the rising threat of intolerance, regionalism and communalism. To quote my favourite author and columnist, M J Akbar- “India is more than just a nation. It is an idea, a brave and modern idea”, wherein such a large number of intensely varying and diverse people can not only co-exist but co-operate whole-heartedly in building a strong entity. That is what our freedom movement aimed at. This is what our freedom fighters dreamed of. Fast forward to today, we are in a mess! The country is pulling apart, many a times, people do not feel empowered but actually bound by the constitutional democratic system that has historically been India’s best selling point. But now, when the citizens witness the slow and painful death of every institution that seeks to uphold this democracy, their faith is visibly shaken in this very system they have been proud of for years. It is not...

Marine Musings- A short story

Image
pic from photography.about.com Sitting on the paved fence at marine drive promenade, looking at the waves striking the rocks and bouncing off, I wondered if there is any meaning to all this, to the unending water, to the blending of the sky into the sea, to the rocks which protect the city and wear themselves apart and to me sitting here, watching all this, when I should actually be back home. It was not for the first time that I was wondering about the underlying meaning and purpose behind all things that people generally are too busy to think about. Maybe, I am too lazy to be busy doing things that everyone does or maybe I am just a fool dabbling in mindless exercises. Nonetheless, my thoughts wandered way beyond the seas, the skies and the rocks. Now, I was thinking about my purpose in life, the cycle of birth and death...when my thoughts were abruptly, rudely, interrupted. Interrupted by the sweetest smell, I turned my face to the right and saw a girl about my age, making spa...

My failings and Mother's love

Today, when I was on the brink And at a loss for hope and light Where tunnel lead to darkness And wishes were dead and dusted… My mother told me, it’s okay! To fall on your face To stumble out of race Or To lose your grace. It happens and has happened before! People have made mistakes galore They have wronged every right And have lost every fight! And those who drowned in sorrow And let fate take their course And remained lost in remorse Never saw a brighter tomorrow! While those who stood up To face life again, to erase their pain, Or to gain from their bane… have seen the Sun rise again from behind the impossible mountains of darkness , misery and regret to make and cherish their own fate!

love & distance

The depression that has set in The sadness that ruins my brain I cannot wait to get it off Cannot wait to live again! For the flowers, all now seem grey And the sky is always dark For the rains never touch me like they did My heart and me seem miles apart! The water’s all gone black I really now want you back The times you are away and not here It seems all’s a lie and nothing’s fair!

Nothingness

The truth that is there That stinks and that rakes Is nothingness all over Beneath stories that you bake What you wish you can make Out of this nothing You can dream and fake But it won’t mean a thing Lies and lies, layers of ‘em Glossy dust to cover The naked truth and pain Garlanded and buried forever The dust will but dust off The lust of lies forsaken And truth shall hold aloft Naked, pure, pristine: nothing!

leaf and life!

Image
the dried leaf when it falls, in the autumn, on the rocks, it flies and dances in the mid-air it looks around and settles far or near... the winds it may take it away a thousand moves, the leaf will display not for a moment will it regret the past life, on the old tree,by the rivulet.. the water there made a sweet music and the drops tingled him in his sleep he,sure, will remember the beautiful past but he will make memories new,and those too will last!
